Always Ready

On a Sunday in January the Robertson County EMS, Medic 1, was dispatched for a chest pain patient. The crew arrived to an alert/conscious male patient. It was determined very quickly that the patient was having a heart attack. The crew transmitted the patient’s EKG to the hospital as well as to the cardiologist. The crew called for assistance from the EMS supervisor and a very short time later the patient went into cardiac arrest. The crew immediately started CPR and the patient was shocked with the defibrillator at which time his heart restarted and the patient regained consciousness. The patient was given cardiac medication to help stabilize his heart and an anticoagulant.

Realizing that every second counts, the EMS crew opted to air lift the patient to the hospital, having him at the hospital within 10 minutes.
