Franklin Lions vs. Navasota Rattlers on September 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Franklin
Last season this game played a huge role in the fate of both teams.
The Franklin Lions used their victory in the game to propel themselves to a great start in 2016 going 8-2 in the regular season.
The Rattlers, after the loss struggled to a 2-8 finish. Both teams made the playoffs and both lost in the Bi-District game.
The Rattlers return 13 starters, 7 on offense and 6 on defense. That group of experienced players should make everyone forget last season ever happened. The Rattlers for sure remember this game well; they lost at home, in front of a Statewide TV audience, and to a Class 3A opponent.
This year returnees QB Jeb Malek and WR Ronnie Jackson promises to be a potent and explosive pass catching combination on offense but the strength of this Rattler team will be their defense.
Led by Division 1 prospect DL Jordan Jefferson, DL Trek Houston, DL Jacob Steels and LB Lawson Hughlett, the Navasota defense could be one of the top defenses in Class 4A.
They will surely get tested by the Franklin veer offense. The Lions can run the ball and they have the backs to do it. They are led by the versatile HB/WB Jared Pedraza who has proven to be a threat both running and catching passes for the Lion offense.
Quarter back Colton Ortner has been steady and has displayed a strong arm throwing the football, which opens up the Franklin attack.
Fullback Clayton Rosprim seems healthy again and he is a bull inside to contain. His tough inside running opens the door for the outside speed of halfbacks Datron Dixon and RaShawn Green. The offense running behind a rebuilt offensive line led by OT Casey Phillips, the Rattler front will provide a strong test of “Will”power. Which team controls the line of scrimmage will win this battle of juggernauts. The Lions offense put up some impressive numbers last season against the Rattlers defense and will look to repeat that effort come Friday night.
The Lions are at home and this game just like last years will be a State broadcast game by FOX Sports. Coach Hedrick and the Lions will be ready you can count on that. The Rattlers have revenge on their minds but the Lions are saying “not in our house.”
